Career Path

What do Morten Arntzen, Peter Evensen, Jeff Pribor and John Wobensmith have in common?  They all began their careers as bankers and have moved over to the ownership side.  Clearly, the owners are recognizing the value of banking experience or, perhaps, they are less expensive once brought in house?

Add to that list, Peter Knudsen, formerly head of Project Finance and Asset Lending and now the General Manager of Nordea’s Singapore Branch, who has accepted the position of CEO of Camillo Eitzen & Co. ASA.

Umm! Peder’s been there two weeks already, is this an opportunity for him?

Direct from Imabari City, Japan

For the first time in our history, Marine Money held its 3rd Annual Japan Ship Finance forum in the traditional island of Shikoku. Despite being the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, Shikoku plays an extremely vital role in the world’s maritime industry as the home to many established Japanese shipyards and shipowners who collectively own about five percent of the global fleet.

MukemmelBirForum

Last Thursday, the 5th annual Marine Money Istanbul Ship Finance Forum took place within sight of the Bosporus at the Swissotel. In our mind, there could not be a more appropriate setting for this or any shipping conference.

After greetings from Marine Money’s Mia Jensen and Kevin Oates, Mr. Metin Kalkavan, as Chairman of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping gave brief introductory remarks which included interesting numbers on the Turkish shipbuilding industry. He was followed to the podium by Mr. Lucien Arkas, the Chairman of Arkas Holdings, who gave the keynote address. Mr. Arkas provided a concise history of his 44 years in shipping. But more importantly, he attributed the Turkish owners’ success in this industry to their high level of entrepreneurship, courage and self-esteem.

A Johnny K Production

Not even Cecil B. DeMille could take what would one presume would be an insipid discussion about moving coal and ore from here to there, while the audience, no less the panelists are imbibing, and make it a major media event. Of course, Johnny K is not your ordinary spinmeister. He began by wrapping the discussion in a mystery that can only be solved if you have an English public school background. Thankfully, Lorraine was here to explain the allusion, which refers to a series of novels by Enid Blyton. Who you might ask and does it matter? The answers to which are: don’t know and no. Fortunately, these were not the same takeaways from the panel discussion. Continue Reading

Conversations with…. Jacques de Chateauvieux, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bourbon

Thanks to Tony Munoz at TM Marketing, we had the opportunity to sit down last week withMr. de Chateauvieux for a broad ranging discussion of the company’s activities, outlook and strategy.

With the predominant portion of its assets and capital invested in offshore oil and gas marine services and dry bulk, it was not surprising to find him ebullient. “These are extraordinary times; everything is up – rates, utilization.” Yet he remains realistic and is not a believer in the super-cycle. Whereas historically cycles were three to five years, he believes that this one might be extended for seven to ten years. In his macro view, which is widely held, requirements for oil cannot stop and existing production facilities are in decline. Oil must be replaced at least at the rate of drawdown. Nothing new here however the image he portrayed of everyone worldwide, with wealth trickling down, wanting to own a car provided an interesting perspective on growing demand. Continue Reading
